Meet Our Founder
Dr. Joann Henry
Educator and Founder of Dream Academy
Dr. Joann Henry served Richmond Public Schools for more than 20 years. She began as a teacher and later held roles as Cooperative Office Education Coordinator, department chair, assistant principal, and educational leader.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from Virginia State University and a Master’s Degree in Education, and she later earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
During her career, Dr. Henry saw the challenges adults faced after leaving high school without a diploma. After she retired in 2012, she created Dream Academy to give these students a flexible, supportive way to finish what they started.
What Is Your Dream?
Throughout her career, Dr. Henry asked her students a simple question. What is your dream? Many students struggled to answer, and for some, it was the first time anyone had asked.
The question came from her mother, who dreamed big for her daughter and encouraged her to pursue opportunities beyond what she could see for herself. Dr. Henry carried that lesson into her work with students for decades.
Today, Dream Academy encourages every student to earn a diploma and to think about what is possible for their future.
